SYMPHONY AT SEA

The ocean covers 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and governs our climate, but if you live in an urban jungle like New York City, those are easy facts to forget. This is a huge problem, because as we neglect the oceans we are damaging our largest ecosystem at an exponential rate. To remind us of their importance, why not integrate the ocean into something that touches people’s hearts and souls every day: music.
At Summit at Sea, attendees will join scientists to gather intelligence on various Atlantic shark species. The team will capture the sharks in order to take blood samples, humanely tag them with GPS location devices, and take relevant data to learn more about the species’ life cycles.
To raise greater popular awareness, the real time geolocation data gathered from the sharks GPS coordinates should be mapped on an “X and Y” grid with sound parameters on the two axes. That grid will then be available as a matrix of trigger points and the sharks’ movements and locations will become a user-accessible sound bank.
To visualize it, imagine the finger in the video above is the shark’s location and the pad of the Kaossilator is the grid. We will use similar technologies to create the sample bank, which could then be handed off to featured Summit Series musician attendees to create tracks sampling the source material created by the sharks’ natural travel patterns.
Summit Series designer attendees could use the completed musical pieces to brand, campaign, and distribute the collection through online retailers such as iTunes. The proceeds of the sale would revert to funding the research program at the University of Miami to sustain ocean habitat research.
This program could be applied to any animal species tagged for science and conservation purposes.
